Work Experience I qualified as a high school teacher, and taught in high schools in South Africa from 1967 to 1972. From 1972 to 1980 I was researcher at the South African Human Sciences Research Council, specialising as an editorial member of the Dictionary of South African Biography. I was appointed as senior lecturer at Unisa in 1980, promoted to associate professor in 1988, and to a full professor in 1996. In my capacity as a lecturer in History I taught my subject to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. I supervised 12 masters and doctoral students. Since Unisa is a distance education university, I produced study guides and tutorial letters for students. As a senior staff member, I was academic as well as administrative course leader, and performed departmental duties, including assessment and appointment of staff members. I was also involved in external examining at various South African universities. I undertook lecturing and research visits to Copenhagen, London, the Netherlands and various universities and archives in the United States. The award was for the best manuscript published by Unisa in 1994.
